A bay lays in a bend of a stream. The Pearl River system with a dense river network cultivates the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The GBA is located in the lower reaches of the Pearl River basin and facing the South China Sea directly. It has become one of the most open and economically dynamic region in China and one of the four largest bay areas in the world. Water serves as important support and bond for development of the GBA. The unique geographical location, global climate change and human activities, increase the complexity of water problems, insufficient water utilization efficiency, water ecological damage, water pollution and disasters occur alternately. How to ensure water security of the GBA has become the focus of experts and researchers all over the world. 

Special session of "Water Safety Guarantee in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area", hosted by Pearl River Water Resources Research Institute, will be held during the XVIII World Water Congress.

This session will focus on issues including water resources allocation and guarantee, water environment management and ecological restoration, flood disasters prevention, and coordination of water conservancy standards, etc., in order to enhance the level of water security guarantee and promote the modernization with harmony between humans and nature, in the GBA.

We are honored to invite Mr. Shahbaz Khan, director of the UNESCO office in China, Mr. Li Xingwei, President of the Macau University of Science and Technology and Chairman of International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), Mr. Zhang Limin, Professor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, current Chairman of the Dam Technical Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE, TC210), and former Chairman of the Geotechnical Risk Management Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Mr. Chen Xiaohong, Chairman of the International Commission on Water Quality of International Association of Hydrological Science (ICWQ-IAHS) and Vice Chairman of the Chinese National Commission for the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (CNC-IAHS), and Mr. Li Yinsheng, Director of the Strategic and Development Research Center of China Three Gorges Corporation, to give keynote speeches. We warmly welcome scholars interested in these research areas to participate and exchange ideas.
