Biography

Professor Henry Lik Yuen Chan is the Deputy Chief Hospital Manager, Head of Department of Internal Medicine, and Head of Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology of Union Hospital in Hong Kong. He is also an Honorary Clinical Professor of Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Chan has been a key investigator in over 30 international trials on antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, and has advised 25 biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in the development of molecular diagnostics and new antiviral drug for viral hepatitis cure. Prof. Chan has published 580 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals in the field of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has received numerous research awards including Okuda Lectureship in Asia Pacific Digestive Week in 2018. His research team has received National Award for Science and Technology Progress (second class award) in HBV in 2012 and State Natural Science Award (second class award) in fatty liver disease in 2020. He was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics in consecutive years from 2018 to 2024 for producing multiple top 1% cited papers under Web of Science. In 2024, he was recognized by Research.com Medicine in China Leader Award for his high citation metrics (#691 world ranking and #4 China ranking). Professor Chan is an associate editor of Hepatology International. He is currently the Scientific Chair in International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL). He was awarded Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Hong Kong in 2008 in recognition of his professional excellence and contribution to the community.
